Let's start with I weighed 125lb in high school, I thought I had a big butt .LOL. I played Varsity Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball though out high school. The first time I very lifted weights was when I was in training for basketball. Our coach had us lifting to make us stronger players. I graduated high school in 1981, I thought I was going to college on a sports scholarship but that did not work out. I went into Balley's fitness gym a few years after high school and started with aerobic classes.
I really didn't like the classes so I went over to the weight section and watched the boys lift. I jumped in and began lifting. I read every magazine I could, asked all kinds of questions then decided to change gyms to a more serious bodybuilding gym. When I walked in the girl behind the counter was also a personal trainer and we began training the next day. I was in the gym at 5:00am working out, then I would go to my 8 hour job and come back after work to finish up. Being the athletic I am I gave myself 1 year to train hard before I did my first show. I entered a local show called the Saddleback low be hold I won. I was so hooked now. I was the stud of the gym I had my first bodybuilding trophy.
Now I got serious I asked one of the top trainers in the gym to train me for my next show, his responses to me was " I will train you if you start taking steroids" I didn't even have to think about that one. I was so against drugs I thought it was cheating. So I went out on my own. I started going down to Golds Gym in Venice beach to watch the big girls and boys train. Hoping some of their bigness would rub off on me I guess. My idol at that time was Rachel Mclish, I wanted to have the same body she had. I entered the Los Angeles contest and took 2nd to Joni Bovine.
See I still remember her name. Her legs were bigger and more cut than mine, so needless to say I became obsessed with my legs. There was a girl in our gym Kelly Riley, she had the most beautiful legs I had seen. I then asked if I could train with her for awhile. We became the best of friends and dieted for shows together, misery loves company. I was living and breathing bodybuilding I had no life outside the gym. In one of my off season my weight got up to 175lb, damn I was big. No, not really I was a pig. Getting this web site together and looking at old pictures I ran across those pictures I never laughed so hard in my life. Me and my friends sat around in tears it was so funny.
Yes I will share with you. Well, after putting on the muscle mass in the off season I would diet my ass of for 12 weeks and get down to 135lbs. My top bench press was 255lb, my top squat was 305lb and my biceps were 16 inches. Getting ready for these show were not cheap, I had to eat Red Snapper fish 4 to 5 oz 4 times a day, or chicken breast 3 to 4 times a day. This went on for 12 weeks at a time. Then there was the contest fee, basically I had to find a sponsor to help out with the money. My next big show was the California state contest. I guess I was a little burned out from constant training, so I went on the party wagon.
Not a good time to start partying when I was getting ready for a show. Needless to say I didn't place in the top 5 that time around. But that didn't stop me once again I went for the California State the following year. I placed 3 rd and it quified me for the Nationals. After Nationals, I go pro that was the plan. I decided this was it I was going for the gold. I hired a trainer who trained Mike Quinn the Pro. I thought I can't lose with this trainer. Story goes I trained and dieted harder than I ever had in my life. Up at 5:00am worked back to the gym at 6:00pm. 2 hours of cardio day, eating nothing but fish, vegi, potato's and going to bed hungry. I was ready for this show, I never looked better in my life.
Three days before the show I was 8% body fat weighing 137lb. My trainer called Friday night before the show and asked if I was ready to win, "Yes I am" he then asked what do you want to eat as a reward. "There is nothing you can do now to screw this up" he said. I love cold cereal. So I poured a big bowl of cold cereal and loved every bite. The problem to this story is....I was allergitic to milk and had no idea. I woke up the next morning looked in the mirror and was in shock. My body had watered over so bad I could not believe my eyes. Milk apparently dairy products will make you bloated and hold water. I was F&^%$ed. After the crying stopped I went to the show and placed third in the Hevey weights. Not bad my first time out, but not good enough. I would of won that show. That's my story and Im stickin to it!
That was the year I got Gladiators, win some lose some I always say. That was the last bodybuilding show I ever did. Im sorry people think bodybuilding is so healthy, there is a balance there. The contest side is very unhealthy and almost created an eating disorder. Thank god it did not, but for years after the fact it took a long time for my body to except normal food without gaining 2 to 3 lbs every time I ate. Weird, but if it weren't for bodybuilding I would not be where I am today in my life. It taught me discipline and hard work. Work hard and achieve big! Click on the store if you need my diet plan for my shows. Also if you need any bodybuilding routines click on the store and enjoy. Good luck, and always remember never stop driving forward for your dreams.
